Former High School Counselor Charged with Felony Sex Offenses

A former counselor from a high school in North Carolina has been taken into custody, with allegations suggesting she engaged in a sexual relationship with a student.

The Asheboro Police Department reported that 39-year-old Amber Elizabeth Walker was arrested on Friday following an arrest warrant. Details were provided by WFMY-TV.

“Asheboro City Schools acknowledges that a former staff member has been detained on allegations of inappropriate conduct.”

As per the arrest warrant, Walker is facing two felony charges linked to sexual activity with a student. If she is found guilty, she could potentially confront up to 94 months behind bars, as indicated by WFMY. During a recent court hearing, prosecutors sought to deny her bail.

In her defense, Walker’s lawyer claimed that she poses no flight risk since she resides in Guilford County, where her young son and parents live. The attorney also noted that Walker wouldn’t have the opportunity to reoffend given that she no longer works for the school.

Nevertheless, the judge ruled that the charges fall under Irina’s Law, qualifying them as violent crimes, thus denying Walker bail without a written promise. This legislation was introduced following the tragic murder of Irina Zalutka on a Charlotte commuter train in October 2025.

Irina’s Law aims to strengthen pretrial release conditions, mandate mental health evaluations for certain defendants, and hasten execution processes. Walker’s bond was set at $50,000, and the judge instructed her to refrain from contacting the alleged victim.

Reports indicated that Walker was distressed, reportedly crying throughout the court proceedings.

Previously, Walker held positions as a counselor and girls’ basketball coach at Asheboro High School. The official Facebook page of Asheboro High School recognized Walker as “Coach Walker” in posts celebrating the girls’ basketball team in both 2019 and 2021.

On Friday, Asheboro City Schools confirmed that the district had employed Walker since February 26, 2018, but stated that she was terminated following the incident. The district has promised to fully cooperate with relevant authorities as needed.

Interestingly, just two months prior, the school was encouraging students aspiring for college to reach out to Walker regarding scholarship opportunities.

Walker is due back in court on May 26, though officials from both the Asheboro Police Department and Randolph County Sheriff’s Office have not responded to inquiries from Blaze News.
