NCAA Transfer Portal Offers New Flexibility for Student-Athletes

The NCAA Transfer Portal has likely provided student-athletes with more freedom than they’ve ever had before. Historically, athletes who transferred faced the challenge of sitting out a year before they could compete again. Now, with the portal, they can jump into play right away. However, as often happens with policy changes, sweeping reforms bring both expected and unexpected outcomes.

It appears that the advent of transfer portals, along with the growing trend of name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals, has widened the chasm between well-funded programs supported by generous boosters and those smaller institutions with fewer financial resources.

Northern Illinois coach Thomas Hammock emphasizes that the current environment might misplace the priorities of players and their families. He leads a program participating in the Power 4 meetings and is concerned about the implications of this new dynamic.

“I had a great college experience,” Hammock shared. “I didn’t receive a dime, but the lessons I learned were worth far more than any amount of money. It’s important to keep your long-term goals in sight.” He noted that college is a crucial period for personal growth. “This isn’t just about the now; you’re preparing for a future.” It’s a transition, from adolescence to adulthood, after all.

Through his reflections on college life, Hammock suggests that going to school is about much more than just athletics. “If you enter college just for sports, you might miss the point entirely,” he remarked. “This is about gaining the skills you’ll need for decades beyond your college life.” He stood firmly on the notion that while financial incentives are tempting, the experiential lessons learned in college are invaluable.

Hammock’s work has already led Northern Illinois to significant achievements, having been awarded two academic national honors during his playing days. Recently, the Huskies qualified for bowl games three times in the last four years, finishing with an 8-5 record last season.

However, it’s worth mentioning that the starting quarterback left the program after entering the transfer portal—a reflection of the ongoing shifts within collegiate sports.
