Trump and Putin Hold Brief Press Conference in Alaska
On Friday, President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin shared a brief yet amicable moment with the media, though no new agreements emerged from their discussions.
Leading up to the summit, Trump had shown a hopeful outlook, suggesting that talks could potentially steer towards a ceasefire and dialogue between Putin and Ukrainian President Voldimir Zelensky. He estimated a 25% chance that their meeting might not succeed.
He expressed: “It’s good that we’re making progress. We didn’t finalize anything this time, but the door is open for more talks.”
During the meeting, Trump noted that there was initial progress, which he regarded as just the start of negotiations, but he refrained from commenting on any potential sanctions against Russia if an agreement wasn’t achieved.
Trump arrived at Alaska’s Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson around 3 PM Eastern for the scheduled discussions, greeting Putin warmly on the tarmac. The two men walked along a red carpet flanked by four F-22 Raptor fighters, as a U.S. military aircraft, including a B-2 stealth bomber, flew overhead.
After a brief photo-op, they entered the presidential vehicle to proceed to their meeting.
Speaking after the session, Putin remarked that had Trump been in power, a Russian invasion of Ukraine would not have occurred. He referred to Trump as his “neighbor” and highlighted the historical ties between Russia and the U.S.
Putin expressed hopes that Ukraine would avoid making backdoor deals that could obstruct peace efforts.
Trump stated, “We had a very productive meeting. We’ve agreed on many points.” He mentioned that while a few topics remain unresolved, they are not all critical. “There’s a good chance we can reach an agreement,” he added.
At the conclusion of the briefing, Trump hinted at the possibility of another summit in the future. “Next time, maybe in Moscow,” he joked to Putin in English.
Trump responded, perhaps hesitantly, “It’s an interesting idea. I might be a bit under the weather about it, but I could definitely see it happening.”
