Trump says progress made but no deal with Putin at Alaska summit

Trump and Putin’s Meeting in Alaska: Progress and Ambiguities

At Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska, President Trump indicated on Friday that some progress was made during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, he didn’t elaborate on specific agreements or lingering disagreements concerning peace in Ukraine.

“We didn’t get there, but we have a good chance,” Trump remarked, keeping the details vague.

Trump didn’t pose questions or share additional specifics. It’s apparent he plans to communicate further with European leaders and Ukrainian President Voldy Milzelensky following the summit.

Both leaders spoke of progress, yet neither offered concrete examples of what that might entail.

“We held a very productive meeting, agreeing on several points. Some are not that important; others could be quite significant,” Trump said.

The meeting itself lasted about three hours. What began as a private discussion turned into a small group setting, including top aide Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkov.

During a joint press conference, Putin mentioned the effective nature of their discussion, while Trump maintained a serious demeanor, often avoiding direct eye contact with his Russian counterpart.

Putin cautioned European and Ukrainian leaders by downplaying the achievements from their talks.

He noted that relations between Russia and the U.S. had deteriorated since he last spoke with President Biden in 2022, just before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine that February.

In anticipation of their meeting, Trump and White House officials had worked to temper expectations regarding any potential peace deal with Putin.

Interestingly enough, the White House went all out to welcome Putin literally by rolling out the red carpet for him when the two arrived at the airbase.

The two leaders shared a cordial handshake during their first encounter and were seen in their limousines, seemingly enjoying the moment. They didn’t respond to reporters’ questions during the greetings or while accompanied by aides.

Trump suggested that he might meet with Putin again soon, hinting that Friday’s discussions could lead to a future summit that might include Zelensky for a focus on peace.

“Next time in Moscow,” Putin responded in English.
