Putin Agrees with Trump on Ukraine War Claims

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed agreement with Donald Trump’s assertion that had he not lost the 2020 election, the war in Ukraine might never have started, even if he had taken office instead of Joe Biden when the conflict broke out.

“I can see that,” Putin remarked during a press conference after a summit at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska.

Trump has made a series of claims on the campaign trail, insisting that if he were back in the White House, things would be quite different. He suggests that Ukraine played a role in instigating the war and argues that the Biden administration could have done more to prevent it from escalating initially.

Trump and Putin’s Relationship Strained

During his address, Putin mentioned his previous efforts to convince American leaders to avoid letting tensions escalate into hostilities. “In 2022, I warned my former American colleagues against this,” he stated. He also noted that U.S.-Russia relations have hit a low point since the Cold War. It’s hard to believe that little improvement has occurred over the last four years.

Putin commented, “It doesn’t benefit our country or the world,” emphasizing the need to shift from conflict to dialogue.

Simultaneously, he acknowledged Trump’s focus on understanding the deeper historical context surrounding the war, calling that pursuit “valuable.” Putin expressed hope that a fresh approach under Trump could lead to “mutually beneficial and equal relationships,” even amidst challenging circumstances.

“Overall, both President Trump and I have every reason to think that establishing trustworthy connections will help us move closer to resolving the conflict in Ukraine,” Putin concluded.

However, the optics of the meeting have drawn criticism. Observers have pointed out that it resembled the controversial meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during his term. Trump has previously alleged that both Biden and Zelensky could have done more to prevent the war, claiming, “Biden could have stopped it, Zelensky could have stopped it, and Putin would never have started it.”
