Sean Kingston Sentenced for Fraud Scheme

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Rapper Sean Kingston was sentenced to three and a half years on Friday after being found guilty of a million-dollar fraud scheme. He has faced significant fallout from his actions, losing both his fame and the ability to deliver extravagant items to sellers.

In March, federal judges convicted Kingston of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and four counts of wire fraud. Interestingly, a co-conspirator, Turner, received a five-year prison sentence just last month.

Before U.S. Judge David Leibowitz delivered his ruling, Kingston expressed remorse in a South Florida courtroom, stating he had learned from his mistakes. His lawyer requested a later self-surrender date due to Kingston’s health issues, but the judge ordered him to be taken into custody right away. Wearing a black suit, Kingston removed his jacket and was led away in handcuffs.

Kingston, 35, along with his mother, was arrested in May 2024 following a SWAT team raid at a rental property in suburban Fort Lauderdale. Turner was detained during the operation, while Kingston was apprehended at Fort Irwin, an army training base in California where he was performing.

According to court documents, from April 2023 to March 2024, Kingston used social media to arrange purchases of luxury goods. After negotiating deals, he’d invite sellers to his upscale Florida home, assuring them that he would feature them and their products online.

Investigators reported that when it was time to settle payments, Kingston or his mother would send victims fake wire receipts for lavish items such as bulletproof Escalades, large clocks, and 19-foot LED TVs.

When payments didn’t materialize, victims often attempted to reach out to Kingston and Turner but usually received no response unless they pursued legal action or contacted authorities.

Originally from Florida but raised in Jamaica, Kingston burst onto the music scene at just 17 with the hit “Beautiful Girls” in 2007. He also gained recognition for his songs “Take You There” and “Fire Burning,” released in the same year.
