WNBA Finals Rematch Recap

In a thrilling finish, Target Center fans made their influence felt during the last 44 seconds of a WNBA Finals rematch on Saturday night.

The game between the Lynx and the Liberty remained competitive throughout the second half, with Minnesota pulling ahead by just a few points.

Kayla McBride hit a crucial three-pointer, sending the crowd into a frenzy as Chappell Roan’s “Hot To Go!” resonated through the arena.

Some spectators remarked on the intense “playoff-like” vibe, even though it was still the regular season—a sentiment that truly encapsulated the atmosphere.

Yet, it’s worth noting that this kind of environment at Target Center felt rare in the regular season.

You could sense how crucial this matchup was for both teams, each missing key players who typically serve as team leaders. The Lynx were vocal about their aspirations to reign supreme in the league, particularly aiming to avenge their loss to the Liberty in the previous finals.

Meanwhile, the Liberty were eager to rectify past mistakes and end this road trip on a high note.

In the final tally, the Lynx edged out the Liberty, winning 86-80.

Sandi Brondello, the coach, was clear and direct with her message before the game—something needed to change after previous performances.

“This was an improvement over what we’ve seen lately,” Brondello remarked.

However, sustaining that level of play is a challenge for the Liberty if they hope to compete for another championship. They’ve struggled with consistency since the season’s start, hindered by injuries affecting top players like Brenna Stewart, Nyara Savaly, and Isabel Harrison.

While Free can’t control how every game goes, it can control the team’s fundamentals and adherence to their style of play.

“When we lose, we lack discipline in key areas—like rebounding,” Brondello added.

On this night, though, things played out differently. The Liberty executed one of their most comprehensive performances of the season, showcasing resilience reminiscent of the defending champions they aspire to be.

Despite some questionable calls, including a notable disparity in free throw attempts—Lynx shooting 33 to Liberty’s 8—the Liberty maintained focus and composure.

New York faced a 15-point deficit in the first half but managed to reduce the gap to five by halftime.

They surged ahead with a 6-0 run to start the third quarter and took their first lead of the game.

Heading into the final quarter, Liberty held a narrow 61-60 lead. But ultimately, the Lynx prevailed.

Next, the Liberty will return to Brooklyn, preparing to host the Lynx again on Tuesday.
