Preview of Sunday shows: Trump-Putin meeting concludes without agreement; DC opposes police control

Sunday shows preview: Trump-Putin summit ends with no deal; DC resists police takeover

President Trump wrapped up a summit in Alaska on Friday, standing alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, they did not disclose any peace agreement regarding Ukraine.

The much-anticipated meeting on U.S. soil stretched over three hours, involving White House staff and seasoned diplomats from Moscow who guided discussions at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.

Those interested in national security observed that Trump seemed to take a firmer stance in U.S. foreign affairs, even referring to Putin as his “friend.”

This coming Monday, Trump is set to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House, aiming to reinforce connections with Eastern European nations.

While specifics of the meeting with Putin weren’t extensively shared, Trump characterized the talks as “very productive.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio traveled from Washington for discussions regarding Russia’s engagement with Ukraine. He may touch upon the outcomes of the summit and future objectives during his appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” along with separate segments on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures” and MSNBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Rubio noted that security guarantees are essential to finalize ceasefire negotiations, and updates on potential contract terms benefiting both Kiev and Moscow may be provided.

Envoy Steve Witkov’s appearances on CNN’s “State of the Union” and Fox News’ “Fox News Sunday” could also reflect ongoing dialogues with Russian leaders, focusing on notable advancements in peace talks.

Former national security advisor Jake Sullivan is expected to share perspectives on the stark shift from the Biden administration’s approach to the Ukraine conflict compared to the current situation under Trump, during segments on ABC and Fox.

Fiona Hill, who previously served as a senior director for Europe and Russia on the National Security Council during Trump’s initial term, will speak on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” Her insights might illustrate both similarities and differences in Putin’s dealings aimed at ending the war following his invasions of Ukraine in 2014 and 2022.

Hill could debate the likelihood of Putin’s territorial ambitions succeeding due to the current ceasefire discussions while also discussing Trump’s reluctance to support secondary sanctions on Russian trading partners despite growing bipartisan pressures in Congress.

As international negotiations stutter, the Trump administration’s activities in Washington are becoming more pronounced.

Over the weekend, more troops were sent from West Virginia, adding to the hundreds of National Guard members who arrived in the capital earlier that week.

The White House directed officers to assist local immigration enforcement and tackle crime, particularly violent incidents involving youth.

Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) criticized the president’s immigration strategy and aligned with Democrats in denouncing Trump’s emergency order enforcing federal oversight in Washington. He remarked, “I have never seen a scene like this in DC since the days following when the current president incited the riot,” posting a photo of tanks stationed outside Union Station.

He further stated, “What DC is facing now is a president who misuses his powers, deploying his army under the guise of law and order. It’s a dictator’s playbook,” and may elaborate on this during his appearance on ABC’s “This Week.”
