Rubio Responds to Brennan’s Claims About European Leaders and Zelensky
Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed comments made by CBS News host Margaret Brennan regarding European leaders’ concerns about President Donald Trump allegedly pressuring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
On “Face the Nation,” Brennan suggested that during a scheduled meeting at the White House, European leaders expressed worries that Zelensky might be coerced into accepting unfavorable terms regarding Ukraine. Rubio, however, pushed back on these assertions, emphasizing ongoing U.S. collaboration with European allies to facilitate discussions related to peace between Russia and Ukraine.
“We recognize there is anxiety among European leaders that Zelensky could be pressured to sign a deal,” Brennan queried. “Can you provide them with reassurance?”
Rubio responded firmly, stating, “No, that’s not accurate. They haven’t come here to prevent Zelensky from being pressured. There have been numerous meetings since then.”
He characterized Brennan’s claims about “bullying” as merely a “silly media narrative” and made clear that the Trump administration had actively encouraged European leaders to participate in the discussions.
“We’ve had many meetings with Zelensky, and the collaboration with European partners has been consistent,” Rubio noted. “The president personally invited them to attend.”
He mentioned there had been “sufficient progress” at the recent Alaska Summit, highlighting the ongoing interactions between Zelensky and global leaders.
Brennan also critiqued Trump for appearing to honor Putin by providing a red carpet welcome at the Alaska Summit. This led to accusations in the media that Trump’s actions undermined Ukraine’s position and too warmly acknowledged Russian leaders.
In the wake of these criticisms, Rubio defended the decision to roll out the red carpet, suggestively framing it as a necessary gesture to foster dialogue aimed at resolving the conflict.
