Rubio Clarifies U.S. Stance on Ukraine Conflict
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has countered claims suggesting that President Donald Trump is endorsing Vladimir Putin’s request for full control over the Donbas region in Ukraine. According to Rubio, such decisions regarding territory will ultimately rest with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“The president has made it clear that these territorial issues are for Zelensky to decide. It’s up to the Ukrainians to come to an agreement,” he explained during an interview on “The Future of Sunday Morning.”
This statement comes shortly after meetings involving Putin and Trump, which took place in Alaska.
Rubio on Russia-Ukraine Dynamics
Rubio discussed the ongoing situation between Russia and Ukraine, highlighting Trump’s involvement. He warned that any new sanctions imposed on Moscow could jeopardize peace talks. “If you put more sanctions on Putin, negotiations for peace become nearly impossible,” he cautioned, suggesting that economic pressures could obstruct Trump’s mediation efforts.
He maintains that Trump is uniquely positioned as a leader capable of brokering peace between these conflicting nations, which have been at odds since February 2022.
Long-Term Security and Negotiations
Rubio also pointed out that European leaders would be instrumental in the peace process, especially in bolstering security guarantees that might encourage Ukraine to come to the table. This week, several world leaders are expected to meet with Zelensky at the White House, accompanied by NATO’s executive director, Mark Latte, as Trump searches for a strategy to deter future Russian aggression.
Despite these efforts, Rubio acknowledged that critical matters such as territorial lines and military alliances remain unresolved and challenging to negotiate. “If one side gets everything they desire, it’s not a peace agreement; it’s surrender,” he remarked.
While peace is not yet assured, Rubio insists that Trump’s readiness to engage both parties could be the most feasible way forward.
