Zelenskyy visits Washington for a meeting with Trump about achieving lasting peace with Russia

Zelenskyy Arrives in Washington Ahead of Key Meeting with Trump

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed his arrival in Washington, D.C., on Sunday for discussions with President Donald Trump focused on ending the ongoing conflict with Russia.

“I’ve made it to Washington and will be meeting with President Trump tomorrow, in addition to European leaders as well,” Zelenskyy remarked. “I appreciate the invitation. We all have a strong desire to see this war conclude soon and effectively.”

During a meeting with European leaders on Monday, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude, stating, “It’s a great honor to host all of them.”

European Leaders Join Forces with Zelenskyy

These European leaders are taking part in the discussions to show their solidarity with Ukraine.

Zelenskyy indicated that this meeting should be markedly different from previous talks on achieving peace with Russia. He emphasized the importance of reliable, enforceable security guarantees, reflecting on the “guarantees” Ukraine received in 1994 after the Soviet Union’s collapse, which ultimately fell short.

The Ukrainian president firmly stated that Ukraine would not accept another temporary ceasefire. According to him, only strong assurances from the U.S. and Europe could deter Moscow from further aggression.

Stance on Territorial Integrity

He articulated a clear position: “Zelenskyy and the EU are against the transfer of any Ukrainian land to Russia.”

In a post on X, Zelenskyy mentioned some recent achievements by the Ukrainian military, reinforcing his belief that they could defend their territory with Western support. “Ukrainians are fighting for their land and independence. Our forces are seeing success in the Donetsk and Sumy regions. We are confident that we will protect Ukraine and ensure its security.”

Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the backing of Trump, the U.S., and European allies but conveyed hope that a united front could compel Russia to end the war, which has dragged on for over three years. “Russia must be the one to conclude this war. I trust that our combined strength, alongside our American and European friends, will push Russia towards genuine peace. Thank you!”

Amidst the discussions, reports surfaced that during a recent summit in Alaska, Trump pressed Russian President Vladimir Putin to withdraw from two eastern regions.

Interestingly, Trump indicated support for Putin’s approach in a post, suggesting that Zelenskyy has the capability to “end the war with Russia” almost immediately if he chooses to do so, while reminding everyone how the conflict originated.

Zelenskyy has consistently maintained that Ukraine will not concede any territory during these turbulent times.
