Trump Says It's Up to Zelensky as European Leaders Come to D.C.

Trump’s Call for Peace in Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky could, as President Donald Trump suggested, potentially end the ongoing Russian invasion by simply agreeing to certain terms. This statement came ahead of a significant meeting between Zelensky and European leaders in Washington.

Zelensky met with Trump at the White House, joined by a sizable delegation from Europe. The discussions are taking place against a backdrop of differing views on how to approach the conflict, particularly regarding international law and the concessions that may be necessary to halt the violence.

Russia complicates the situation, firmly establishing its own demands and “red lines,” while simultaneously proposing deals. They have shown reluctance to engage in trilateral negotiations between Russia, the US, and Ukraine, which many believe are essential for any peace agreement.

In remarks shared overnight, Trump emphasized that Monday’s meeting is far more consequential than mere photo opportunities. He indicated that it’s Ukraine’s responsibility to seek peace, stating that Zelensky could swiftly end the war if he chose to.

Trump also commented on Crimea, stating that it “will not return,” a reference to the lack of decisive action taken by former President Obama in response to Russia’s incursions in 2014. He expressed that some issues may never change.

These statements underline the urgency of reaching a consensus within the European Union, which has recently reiterated that any resolution must not involve forcibly altering borders. The EU insists that Russia should not have a say in Ukraine’s aspirations for EU and NATO membership.

While this could spell challenges for Europe’s stance, it seems Trump views a ceasefire as a preliminary step before engaging in serious peace negotiations, arguing that many ceasefires are ineffectual and fail to bring lasting resolutions.

Additionally, reports indicate that Putin has proposed a peace deal that includes immediate terms in exchange for the entire Donbass region—a proposal that would clash with EU demands regarding territorial integrity. Much of Donbass, including Donetsk and Luhansk, still remains under Ukrainian control.

As European leaders prepare to meet with Trump, it appears that Zelensky is maintaining a cautious approach due to constitutional limitations in Ukraine. Trump’s criticism of Zelensky suggests there may be an opportunity for progress, albeit both leaders seem reluctant to pursue certain paths in public.

Putin has yet to agree to meet with Zelensky, and his military actions continue to escalate as he positions for what could be a costly peace agreement. Ukrainian officials assert that Russia’s aggression aims not only to pressure Ukraine but also to undermine diplomatic efforts.

EU Foreign Minister also remarked on Putin’s approach, indicating a clear lack of intent to resolve the conflict soon. Meanwhile, a robust lineup of leaders from Ukraine, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Finland, and the EU is anticipated in Washington.
