Monica Lewinsky plays a significant role in an upcoming Hulu series about Amanda Knox, the American student who spent nearly four years in an Italian prison due to a wrongful murder conviction in 2007.
Lewinsky, who gained worldwide attention in the 1990s due to her involvement with then-President Clinton, is the executive producer of The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, set to premiere on streaming platforms on Wednesday.
During her appearance on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” Lewinsky shared that she connected with Knox’s story because it reflected the plight of another young woman subjected to media scrutiny. She described how both women became targets for public judgment.
“Every woman internalizes that message; they become collateral damage,” she noted. “It’s a broader perspective.”
Lewinsky emphasized her intention to illustrate the lasting impact on individuals like herself and Knox once they are no longer in the limelight.
“It’s a message that can resonate with younger generations,” she added thoughtfully.
Knox mentioned the unexpected similarities between her experience and Lewinsky’s, particularly regarding their respective exits from the headlines and the sensationalism that surrounded them.
“We were both interrogated and became caricatures in the media,” Knox remarked.
The series is structured to detail the fight for Knox’s innocence and the relentless pursuit of her freedom, exploring why the authorities were so intent on prosecution, making it a compelling narrative.
Lewinsky expressed the series’ significance, saying, “The headlines continue, but our focus often shifts away.”
Actress Grace Van Patten, known from the Hulu series “Tell Me Lies,” stars as Knox, with the first two episodes available for streaming on Wednesday, followed by additional episodes released through October 1st. Hulu has also shared an intense 90-second preview online.
