Newsom Questions Federal Presence at Local Event
California Governor Gavin Newsom is requesting information from the Trump administration regarding the presence of federal agents at a recent event. This gathering, attended by other Democrats, focused on community outreach efforts from the previous week.
In a formal records request submitted on Sunday, Newsom called for all documents related to the event, which includes text messages, Microsoft Teams messages, phone logs, and memos from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Newsom, known for his criticism of President Trump, stated, “Trump’s use of military and federal law enforcement to intimidate his political opponents represents a troubling shift towards authoritarianism. It’s like he’s trying to emulate the oppressive tactics found in Russia and North Korea.”
He further emphasized that the state wouldn’t regress in its defense of democratic principles, urging the Trump administration to address this concerning behavior.
DHS Deputy Director Tricia McLaughlin responded by conveying that border patrols are consistently active in Los Angeles to track individuals illegally residing in the country as part of the administration’s immigration enforcement strategies. “DHS’s focus is on law enforcement, not on catering to Mr. Newsom,” she added.
“Under President Trump, any violation of the law results in consequences. We won’t tolerate criminal activity from unlawful foreigners,” she remarked.
Amidst the ongoing political tension between red and blue states, Newsom continues to play a significant role. He recently unveiled plans for a voting measure aimed at bypassing California’s independent commission that oversees district mapping, a move aimed at benefitting Democrats in response to Republicans’ district reforms in Texas.
