Helen Mirren on James Bond’s Future
In a recent discussion, British actress Helen Mirren shared her thoughts on the ongoing debate about the portrayal of James Bond. She firmly stated that the next actor to take on the iconic role “must be a man,” while addressing the evolving perceptions surrounding the beloved spy character.
During a conversation with Saga Magazine, which centered on her new film about a retired spy, Mirren acknowledged her feminist beliefs but maintained that a female Bond wouldn’t work. “I’m very much a feminist, but James Bond has to be a guy,” she asserted. This led to a reflection on how her character in the film, “Thursday Murder Club,” could be seen as more relatable, but perhaps not as exhilarating as the Bond franchise.
Mirren expressed that, while she personally finds the James Bond series not quite to her liking—particularly regarding its portrayal of women—it’s essential to keep Bond as a male character. “James Bond has to be James Bond; otherwise, it’s something else,” she remarked.
As for future adaptations, the new owners of the Bond franchise, Amazon MGM, are reportedly considering a “fresh, exotic” take on the character. This has understandably sparked some concern among fans regarding how the franchise might evolve.
Mirren has previously mentioned her distaste for the outdated attitudes presented in the Bond series, citing a sense of “deep sexism” in its narratives. “I didn’t like James Bond. I didn’t like the way women were treated in the series,” she stated in a prior interview. Her critique highlights a call for a more nuanced representation in Hollywood, especially in action films featuring female leads, a subject also echoed by actress Charlize Theron.
There are numerous names being floated for the next Bond, including Idris Elba, James Norton, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, though Elba has reportedly stepped back from consideration.
