Positive Reactions to Trump’s Meeting with European Leaders
Former US ambassador to Russia, Michael McFaul, commended President Donald Trump’s recent meeting with European leaders concerning the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. The gathering included Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. On NBC’s “Special Report,” McFaul highlighted the significance of bringing these leaders together, suggesting that the meeting was worthwhile, especially following Trump’s earlier summit in Alaska.
“I think it was a very positive meeting. Having all these European leaders alongside President Zelensky was a great idea,” McFaul stated. He noted that the discussions were crucial as they helped shift the focus of dialogue, especially in light of past meetings between Trump and Putin. “This is definitely a step in the right direction,” he added.
During the meeting, the leaders revisited talks of a ceasefire, an initiative notably supported by Prime Minister Merz. McFaul emphasized that the idea that a ceasefire would obstruct negotiations is historically inaccurate. “Why should people suffer and die during negotiations?” he questioned.
Some leaders also voiced their support for security guarantees for Ukraine similar to NATO’s Article 5. “The most important takeaway is that they’re discussing security assurances, which could involve European soldiers. That’s a significant advancement alongside American support,” McFaul remarked.
A recent Gallup poll indicated that nearly 70% of Ukrainians desire a swift end to the war, while only around 24% advocate for continuing to fight until victory is achieved. CNN Chief Data Analyst Harry Enten noted that public opinion among Ukrainians was quite different at the war’s outset.
Trump has consistently aimed for peace between Ukraine and Russia and has pledged to resolve the conflict during the upcoming 2024 presidential election. He also mentioned in a recent post that he would oppose Ukraine’s NATO membership, a stance that aligns with Putin’s view that NATO expansion is unacceptable for Russia.
