Scholten withdraws from Iowa Senate race and supports another state representative.

Iowa State Representative JD Scholten, a Democrat, announced on Monday that he will support his fellow Democrat Rep. Josh Turek in the upcoming U.S. Senate campaign, effectively suspending his own efforts and ruling out endorsements for incumbent Republican Senator Joni Ernst.

“Today, I’m pausing my campaign. This might come as a surprise, but I believe it’s the best choice for both Iowans and myself,” Scholten stated.

He further explained, “From the outset, I thought that a populist athlete from the western Iowa grasslands would be the strongest candidate for the general election. I still believe that, but I’m fully confident that Josh Turek can take on this challenge instead of me. So, I’m stepping back and supporting him.”

Team USA’s two-time Paralympic gold medalist, Turek, revealed last week that he intends to participate in the crowded Democratic primary, aiming to unseat Ernst in the mid-2026 elections.

Scholten, who launched his Senate bid in early June, cited friendship as a significant factor in his decision to end his campaign, highlighting their shared values and long-standing collaboration in the state legislature.

“Ultimately, I concluded that he can effectively address issues I care about deeply — like universal health care, breaking up monopolies hurting farmers and consumers, and tackling undue political influence. As a friend, I’m proud to endorse him,” he added.

He made a point of clarifying that his withdrawal was a personal choice, free from any outside pressure.

“I want to stress that this is my own decision. I believe it’s the right thing to do, so I’m ending my campaign. Joni Ernst needs to be held accountable for her failed leadership. I want the Democrats to win,” he said.

As for Ernst, she is currently seeking a third term in the Senate, having previously secured reelection against a Democratic opponent by approximately seven points in 2020. The Republicans have traditionally held the Senate seat in Iowa, and Trump carried the state by about 13 points in the last election.

Later on Monday evening, Scholten plans to join Turek for a campaign event where they will formally announce his support, according to Turek’s campaign.

“I’m thrilled to have JD’s backing,” Turek expressed. “For the last few years, JD and I have been working together in the state legislature, focusing on reducing costs for Iowa families, making healthcare more affordable and accessible, and improving housing conditions — all aimed at making life a bit easier and better for Iowans.”

“We have a fantastic opportunity to defeat Joni Ernst in 2026, and we’re excited to unite our efforts with JD,” he concluded.
