National Guard Halts Attack in Washington, D.C.
The National Guard has confirmed that they intervened during an incident in Washington, D.C. According to a press release, Staff Sgt. Hector Amaya of the DC Air National Guard detailed how he was patrolling the National Mall when he noticed a park police officer facing an attack while he was directing traffic.
Amaya recounted, “The park police officers asked for our assistance. I was the first to get there, and we managed to detain the suspect and hand him over to park police.” He emphasized the importance of being present in such situations, stating, “That’s what being here is all about. Everyone would have done it. It’s not just about seeing someone in trouble; I helped them.”
Having grown up in the Metropolitan DC area, Amaya shared that he remembers visiting the National Mall during a school trip in fifth grade, and continues to feel a strong connection to the city even in his twenties.
This event took place shortly after President Donald Trump announced a significant initiative aimed at addressing crime in the capital. During a recent press conference, Trump activated Section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, which places the DC Metropolitan Police Department under federal authority and calls on the National Guard to tackle escalating urban challenges.
Statistics reveal that car thefts in D.C. have doubled over five years, while carjackings have tripled. Additionally, 2023 has seen a record high in murders.
Trump remarked, “Our capital has been overrun by violent gangs, ruthless criminals, unruly youth groups, drug offenders, and homeless individuals. We’re not going to stand by like we did along the southern border.”
A press release from the National Guard highlighted that, contrary to some media narratives, local residents have a favorable view of the National Guard’s presence in the city.
“I want people to see us as humans—neighbors and friends who are here to help,” Amaya asserted.
This announcement coincides with Attorney General Pam Bondi’s report of over 300 arrests in D.C. on a recent Sunday. She noted, “Last night, our federal and D.C. law enforcement partners made 68 arrests and seized 15 illegal firearms. Suspected murderers and drug traffickers are facing charges. I will continue to stand with you to make D.C. safe again!”
