Trump Encourages Swift Action on Texas District Change Bill

Former President Donald Trump has called on the Texas state legislature to quickly pass a contentious district change bill. This request came after Texas Democrats returned to the legislature following a two-week absence. In a statement, he emphasized, “Please pass this map as quickly as possible.”

During a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders, Trump reiterated the importance of the bill, referring to it as “one of the most popular initiatives I have ever supported.” He also expressed gratitude to Texas Governor Greg Abbott and other state leaders for their efforts.

Trump praised Texas Republicans, claiming their success in the 2024 elections included receiving a record 6.4 million votes. He remarked, “It’s encouraging to see Republicans uniting to save our country.” He urged party members to act swiftly on the proposed map.

The backdrop to this is a protracted standoff between Texas Republican leaders and House Democrats, who left the state to prevent a quorum that would allow the passage of the bill. After the Democrats’ exit, Abbott and other GOP leaders were resolute, even hinting at potential arrests for those who did not return.

The absent Democrats have stated they won’t come back until another Democrat initiates action to “nullify” the Republican seat allocations. They’ve committed to staying away until a special legislative session, which has been called to focus on district bills and other priorities, is convened.

Obama Commends Texas Democrats

In light of the situation, former President Obama has praised the Texas Democrats who chose to leave, characterizing their decision as “inspiration.”

The special session recently concluded, but Abbott has called for another session to commence soon. Meanwhile, the Texas Senate has already passed the district change measure.

On a related note, the California legislature reconvened, and Democrats are poised to approve a proposal that could create several new left-leaning congressional districts at the expense of Republican representation. Governor Gavin Newsom recently announced that California voters would soon have the opportunity to vote on a constitutional amendment regarding this rezoning plan.

Gov. Newsom Responds to Trump

In a recent press conference, Governor Newsom addressed Trump’s support for the Texas district bill, vowing to “confront fire with fire.” His remarks come as California Democrats work on their own district changes.
