Cuomo Targets Mamdani’s Stance on Prostitution
Former Governor Andrew Cuomo is raising eyebrows with his comments about prostitution in New York City, specifically targeting his rival, Zohran Mamdani, in the mayoral race. After Mamdani defeated him by a significant margin in the Democratic primary back in June, Cuomo is now warning that New York could become “the nation’s capital of prostitution” if the young democratic socialist wins in November.
Mamdani, who sent shockwaves through the political landscape with his primary win, had previously advocated for the decriminalization of sex work during his 2020 bid for the state legislature. As a state legislator, he even co-hosted a bill aimed at decriminalizing sexual labor statewide.
Interestingly, however, this topic didn’t come up too often during Cuomo’s current campaign for mayor, set for 2025. At a recent campaign event, when asked about the criticism surrounding Mayor Eric Adams’ independent stance on non-criminal prostitution, Mamdani emphasized that his campaign is focused on creating a dignified living environment for all New Yorkers.
Cuomo quickly responded, citing a recent incident where Mamdani was asked if he would direct the NYPD to stop making arrests for prostitution. He criticized Mamdani’s approach by comparing him to the previous mayor, Bill de Blasio, suggesting that Mamdani would simply mimic de Blasio’s policies, which he believes have failed the city.
Supporters of decriminalizing prostitution argue it protects sex workers, reducing their vulnerability to exploitation and violence. Yet, research points to a rise in crime and human trafficking in regions where sex work is legalized.
Cuomo noted that parts of the city have seen an increase in sex workers since he signed legislation in early 2021 that lifted certain prohibitions related to prostitution. Despite this, he seemed unsure when asked about the specific bill, admitting he would need to look it over again.
Cuomo remarked on a recent visit he made to Roosevelt Avenue in Queens, where he observed clear signs of prostitution. He expressed concern for local businesses and the impact on community health, particularly the potential negative influence on children.
Mamdani, who has Ugandan roots, could make history as both New York City’s first Muslim mayor and its first millennial mayor if he wins. He’s also faced criticism for his views on prostitution from current Mayor Adams. Adams recently questioned the morality of Mamdani’s position, challenging the compatibility of such beliefs with the Quran.
Mamdani has gained traction through an energetic campaign focused on addressing high living costs and affordable housing, with significant backing from well-known progressives like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders. His innovative use of social media and ambitious proposals, such as eliminating public transit fares and providing “free childcare” for younger children, have caught voters’ attention.
Polls indicate Mamdani is currently leading in a city where Democratic candidates hold a substantial edge over Republicans. Notably, Curtis Sliwa, co-founder of the Guardian Angels, is running again as the Republican candidate, alongside Jim Walden, a former federal prosecutor who’s campaigning as an independent.
The Mamdani campaign has yet to respond to Cuomo’s recent criticisms.
