Department of the Interior Unveils Offshore Lease Schedule
The Department of the Interior (DOI) made an announcement on Tuesday regarding its long-term offshore lease plan, signaling a shift toward expanding America’s energy resources. This move contrasts sharply with the previous administration’s restrictions on offshore oil and gas leasing.
According to the DOI, the new leasing schedule, which aligns with significant legislation, includes plans for four lease sales in Cook Inlet and the U.S. Gulf as well as Alaska, with targets set for August of the next year and continuing through to 2028. While the Biden administration has been phasing out offshore oil and gas leases and imposing a drilling ban on substantial areas, this new schedule indicates a resurgence of leasing similar to what occurred under the Trump administration.
“This law represents a pivotal moment in unlocking America’s energy potential,” stated Doug Burgham, the Interior Secretary. “Under President Trump’s guidance, we are rolling out ambitious long-term initiatives that will enhance energy independence, create well-paying jobs, and promote responsible offshore resource development.”
The first lease sale, named “Big Beautiful Gulf 1,” is planned for December 10, 2025, with the DOI’s Office of Marine Energy Management set to provide notification at least 30 days before the sale.
The DOI highlighted that the Cook Inlet and areas in the Gulf and Alaska have significant potential to boost U.S. energy output, aiming to reduce the country’s dependence on foreign oil, which currently accounts for about 14.5% of the nation’s production, according to the Energy Information Administration.
On his first day back in office, Trump initiated steps to “unleash American energy,” including a declaration of a National Energy Emergency. This new policy aims to broaden domestic energy explorations and reopen quarterly oil and gas lease sales as permitted by existing laws.
