Tragedy in Tremonton: Two Officers Killed in Shooting

Two police officers from Utah were tragically killed while responding to a call related to a domestic disturbance on Sunday evening. The officers, Sergeant Lee Sorensen, aged 56, and Officer Eric Estrada, 31, both with the Tremonton Garland Police Department, lost their lives at a residence in the Tremonton area.

Chief of Police Chad Reyes, overseeing the investigation from Brigham City, described these officers as “undoubtedly heroes” during a press conference on Monday morning. The events began around 9:30 PM when police received multiple hang-up calls from a home in Tremonton. An officer who first arrived began speaking with someone inside the house when an armed man emerged and opened fire.

The gunman fatally shot one officer and then turned on the second officer, who had rushed to assist. It was noted that Sorensen had dedicated 17 years to law enforcement, primarily at Garland Police Department, where he had recently been promoted to Sergeant, with a ceremonial swearing-in scheduled for the following Friday. He leaves behind his wife, Lanett, and their children.

Officer Estrada had joined the force in 2017, previously working with the Logan Police Department before moving to the Tremonton Police Station just this year. Described as deeply devoted to his family, he is survived by his wife Britney and their two children, Siena and Luca. Estrada was known for his passion for engaging with the community.

As the incidents unfolded, deputies from the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office also responded and were reportedly fired upon while inside their vehicle with a service dog. The injured deputy has since been released from the hospital, while the service dog has been hospitalized but is in fair condition.

Following the shooting of the officers, bystanders managed to persuade the suspect to surrender, leading to his apprehension. Authorities reported that the suspect has been charged with aggravated murder, though his name has not yet been released publicly.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox expressed his sorrow over the tragic night. In an online statement, he emphasized the state’s mourning for these brave officers and ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in their honor.
