European Leaders Urged to Advocate for Ukraine
On Tuesday, CNN host Abby Phillip discussed on “Pivot” the idea that European leaders need to actively pursue President Donald Trump to gain support for Ukraine amidst its ongoing conflict with Russia.
Following a summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump in Alaska last Friday, the US President met with several European leaders at the White House the next Monday. This gathering included Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Phillip noted during recorded Podcasts prior to the meeting that the rapid arrangements indicated panic among European officials.
“I think this is quite extraordinary,” Phillip remarked. She emphasized the urgency of European leaders quickly traveling to Washington to show solidarity with Zelensky at this meeting with Trump, suggesting a level of concern not seen since 9/11.
She further explained that this urgency indicated a deep worry about Trump’s decision-making, highlighting that they felt the need to present a unified front to guide what they perceive as the correct outcome.
Additionally, CBS News host Margaret Brennan stated that European leaders aimed to participate in discussions with Trump and Zelensky to ensure the US President wouldn’t pressure Zelensky into accepting an unfavorable agreement regarding Ukraine. However, Secretary of State Marco Rubio dismissed her allegations, labeling them as “a stupid media story,” clarifying that the Trump administration had proactively invited them.
“We’ve been collaborating with these leaders for weeks on such topics,” Rubio stated. “We chose to hold this meeting, so they were invited.”
Michael McFaul, former US ambassador to Russia under President Barack Obama, praised the Monday meeting. He considered it beneficial and appreciated the involvement of European leaders alongside President Zelensky, viewing it as a significant move.
Phillip also pointed out concerns within the media regarding Trump’s perceived favorable treatment of Putin during the Alaska summit. She remarked that the optics were troubling, suggesting it could negatively impact perceptions of Ukraine.
During his first term, Trump facilitated agreements in the Middle East, establishing ties between Israel and several countries, while his second term has included efforts for peace negotiations in various international conflicts.
Moreover, in June, the US bombed Iran’s nuclear site, a move reported to have severely damaged their nuclear capabilities, according to multiple intelligence agencies.
