Sophie Cunningham of the Fever recently defended her sister, Lindsay, on social media after Lindsay faced derogatory comments following remarks about the WNBA’s treatment of players.
After Sophie suffered a serious right knee injury that sidelined her for the rest of the season during a game against the Sun, Lindsay took to X to share her thoughts.
In response, some users mocked Lindsay, sharing phrases like “Shut-up Bitches to Protect Athletes” along with a video highlighting Sophie’s impressive plays in a recent game.
Sophie joined the conversation via a message on X. She referenced an old saying about being cautious and tagged her message with a playful kiss emoji.
The day after this exchange, the Fever confirmed that Sophie would miss the remainder of the 2025 WNBA season due to the injury she sustained in the second quarter of Sunday’s game at Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut.
Although no specific diagnosis has been shared, the team expects Sophie to make a full recovery.
In light of the situation, the Fever signed guard Shey Peddy for a seven-day hardship deal and released Kyra Lambert.
The injury occurred when Cunningham collided with Bria Harley of the Sun, leading to her being unable to continue playing as she clutched her knee in pain.
Sophie has been vocal about her frustrations with the league, even facing fines for her critical comments directed at referees earlier this season. Notably, she expressed her views during her podcast on July 28, highlighting contradictions she perceives within the league’s practices.
Additionally, she had a previous incident where she was fined $500 for lip-syncing to a song’s lyrics that seemed to poke fun at the referees.
As for the Fever, they’re set to play at home on Friday and face the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday, looking to make a strong showing.
