Married teachers from Ohio die in a fiery crash out of state while taking their eldest son to college.

Tragically, two cherished educators from Ohio, Maria Nanny, 50, and Donald Nanny, 55, lost their lives in a catastrophic accident while traveling on Interstate 40 near Chapel Hill on Friday afternoon.

Maria was a passenger in their minivan, and unfortunately, she died at the crash site. Donald, who was driving, was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital after being airlifted there.

The couple had been dropping off their eldest son at the University of North Carolina when the accident occurred. Their unexpected deaths have left their school community in profound shock, as classes had just begun.

“They were outstanding teachers—loving, dedicated, and always courteous,” said Shari O’Renski, Cleveland Teachers Union president.

She added, “Their involvement in the community was significant, and the impact of their loss is immense. It feels unthinkable for their families and children; it’s truly heartbreaking.”

At the time of the incident, two of their younger children, aged 9 and 15, were in the back seat. They were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. Their eldest son, Noah, 19, was in another vehicle when the accident occurred and has been by his brother’s side since.

It’s hard to pinpoint the cause of the accident, as no other vehicles were involved, according to officials. Sgt. Tyler Tucker commented, “It’s difficult to assess what really happened.”

Maria’s brother, Sandro Galindo, shared that the couple leaves a lasting legacy driven by love and commitment to their children, families, and students. “Maria and Donald were incredibly loving parents,” he remarked during a fundraiser launched to support the family.

“They were dedicated sons, daughters, brothers, caring teachers, and friends. Their contributions to the community and their students were substantial. They cultivated a legacy filled with love and family.”

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
