Israel eliminates terrorist linked to October 7 kidnapping in Gaza airstrike

Israeli authorities reported on Tuesday that an airstrike earlier this month led to the death of a terrorist involved in the October 7, 2023 attack. The strike, which occurred in Gaza on October 10, resulted in the death of Jihad Kamal Salem Najar, who was tied to the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) and Israel’s internal security agency.

Yarden Vivas, a victim from the October 7 incident, expressed gratitude toward the IDF and those responsible for eliminating Najar. In a statement shared by the Hostage and Missing Family Forum, he noted, “I appreciate the efforts made to prevent him from hurting others.” He added, “I’m hopeful for the safe return of my friends David and Ariel, along with the remaining 48 hostages.”

Najar had a significant role in the assault on Kibbutz Nil Oz, a key site during that deadly day. During the attack, Vivas’ family was separated and tragically killed. Vivas himself endured 480 days as a hostage before his release in January. His wife, Siri, and their two young children, Ariel and Kfir, lost their lives before being recovered.

While held captive, Vivas was forced to participate in a video, breaking down as Hamas claimed his family had been killed. His release spurred deep emotional reactions, with his family describing it as a bittersweet moment, stating, “A quarter of our hearts returned to us 15 months later. Yarden is home, but the house feels incomplete.”

Following the attacks, the Vivas family has come to symbolize the profound impact of the violence. Footage of Vivas holding two young children has resonated worldwide. Meanwhile, Israel has committed to recovering additional remains from Hamas, asserting that victory will not be declared until every hostage is returned.

In a related note, in April, Israel announced the killing of Mohammed Hassan Mohammed Awad, the senior commander of the Palestinian Mujahideen, who had orchestrated several attacks on Kibbutz Nir Oz.
