Storms Affect Chicago Alderman’s Reactions

Chicago politicians, particularly those with progressive views, are feeling the heat as their district faces significant challenges after severe storms and flooding hit Nashville.

Alderwoman Stephanie D. Coleman (D) made her appearance at the 40th Stellar Gospel Music Awards, dressed in a radiant yellow outfit paired with gold accessories and a stylish Chanel vanity bag.

At 37, Coleman showcased her standout look through multiple social media posts, some of which captured her twirling in the dress and gracefully running through hallways, almost like a model on the runway.

Meanwhile, the windy city endured a relentless barrage of thunderstorms over a period of 17 hours from August 16 to August 17, as Coleman enjoyed festivities in Music City.

The storms led to severe flooding and damaging winds across various neighborhoods in Chicago, particularly affecting Chicago Lawn, Englewood, Gage Park, New City, and parts of Coleman’s District 16, which includes West Englewood.

Her decision to attend the awards ceremony during such a critical time sparked backlash online from constituents grappling with the impacts of flooding.

“If you live in the 16th Ward and are facing severe flooding without help from your councillors, here’s where to find Stephanie Coleman,” one frustrated resident commented.

Another critique pointed out that she seemed preoccupied with her grand aspirations instead of the serious issues plaguing her district.

“This is what represents Chicagoans,” one commenter expressed, while another compared her to a previously criticized local figure, capturing the sentiment of many residents.

Residents shared distressing videos showing floodwaters rushing into their homes, voicing frustration about local politicians who seem focused on broader issues rather than urgent local infrastructure needs.

One post emphasized that instead of getting entangled in international matters, local politicians should prioritize addressing ongoing local issues—like persistent flooding and failed infrastructure initiatives.

Coleman has been serving as a representative for the City Council’s 16th District since 2019 and took on the role of chairman of the Chicago Black Caucus in 2023. She is also recognized as the youngest African-American woman to serve on the Chicago City Council.

After the flooding, she returned to her office to distribute emergency flood kits to those affected in her district.

District 16 experienced rain accumulation of 2-3 inches, which led to the flooding. Just a couple of days later, on August 18, an additional inch of rain fell.

The region near Joliet saw the highest rainfall, exceeding six inches, along with measured wind speeds of up to 70 mph in Algonquin, northwest of Chicago.

Upon her return, Coleman provided her constituents with resources for flood assistance. She reassured her community, saying, “I know many of you are still dealing with the aftermath of the floods. My office and I are here to help.”

Her team also worked on organizing emergency flood kits to distribute from her office. In a video announcement, Coleman acknowledged the devastation in her ward due to recent flooding, further displaying her awareness of the pressing issues at hand.
