Mayor of Los Angeles delays fire report while federal investigation into Palisades fire is ongoing

Delay in Palisade Fire Action Report

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has decided to postpone the action report regarding the Palisade Fire until a federal investigation into its cause is finalized.

Bass explained that the delay comes after a request from a U.S. attorney’s office urging local leaders to hold off on the report’s release due to ongoing inquiries involving various hazardous materials. This includes alcohol, cigarettes, firearms, and explosives.

Some community organizations have voiced their dissatisfaction with this postponement. They argue that residents deserve information about the city’s response, even while federal investigations are in progress.

According to California law, local governments must prepare post-disaster reports following any declared emergencies. The U.S. attorney’s office is currently looking into how the fire that devastated the area in January began.

City officials anticipate potential legal issues regarding their response, hinting that the forthcoming report could have substantial legal and financial implications for Los Angeles. A source close to the mayor shared that the report will detail internal resource usage since the fire started.

The Emergency Services Act requires the Department of Emergency Services to coordinate with state and local agencies to provide a report within 180 days of any declared disaster.

Bass released a statement recently, explaining that the postponement is intended to prevent any interference with the federal investigation. The report will be made public as soon as the Department of Justice concludes its inquiries.

State regulations dictate that the city of Los Angeles is obligated to produce an action report on the Palisade fire. Last week, the U.S. attorney’s office indicated that the Federal Director would announce findings in order to avoid disrupting the ongoing federal investigation.

The Palisade fire erupted in January, rapidly consuming over 23,000 acres. It resulted in the destruction of more than 6,800 structures, claimed 12 lives, and displaced over 100,000 residents. Estimated losses from the fire range from $28 billion to nearly $54 billion, marking it as the third most devastating wildfire in California’s history.
