Two German fighter jets were deployed from Romania overnight in response to a large-scale Russian missile and drone assault on Ukraine, which occurred only a mile from the NATO border.
The Romanian Defense Ministry announced on Wednesday that the two Eurofighter Typhoon jets, stationed at the Mikhail Kogarniceanu airbase as part of NATO’s air policing efforts, were sent to “monitor air conditions.” This deployment comes amid Russian aircraft and missiles crossing the NATO boundary.
Despite recent discussions between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, airstrikes on Ukraine persist. Overnight, strikes were reported targeting oil and port facilities in the Odesa region, situated by the Danube River, which acts as a natural border between Ukraine and NATO nations like Romania.
It’s noteworthy that this month has witnessed Russia’s most significant offensive against Ukraine after the leaders’ meeting involving Trump, Putin, and Ukrainian President Voldy Mirzelensky.
The arrival of NATO jets follows a series of concerning incidents over the past weeks. As the U.S. and Europe push for Russia to cease hostilities, NATO’s engagement is escalating.
President Zelensky reported an aggressive wave of over 60 drones and ballistic missiles launched across Ukraine overnight, particularly impacting the northeastern area of Smee. Early Wednesday, drone strikes left 14 individuals injured, and these numbers later revised upward.
“Families with injured children—ages 5 months, 4 years, and 6 years—have sought medical help,” Zelensky remarked.
In Donetsk, glide bombs wreaked havoc on five apartment buildings, and as of Wednesday morning, three people remained trapped under the rubble.
The Ukrainian leader added, “Rescue efforts are ongoing,” although he didn’t specify the total number of injured resulting from these attacks.
Zelensky emphasized that these aggressive strikes demonstrate the urgent need for increased pressure on Moscow, including imposing fresh sanctions until genuine diplomatic efforts can take root.
“We require strong security guarantees to ensure lasting peace,” he remarked, underscoring the necessity for collective action. Upcoming meetings at the White House on Monday will center around providing Ukraine with security assurances following high-stakes discussions among Trump, Zelensky, and key NATO figures.
