Israel Presses On With Gaza City Occupation Amid Suggested Ceasefire

Israeli Forces Prepare for Action in Gaza City

Israeli military preparations are underway for a potential incursion into Gaza City, even as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed skepticism about recent ceasefire proposals from Hamas, likening them to negotiating with hostages still in captivity, as reported by The New York Times.

Israel has mobilized troops near the city and plans to call up 50,000 reservists to support ongoing operations. Hamas has allegedly accepted an Arab-backed proposal to instate a ceasefire, which would see some remaining hostages returned from Gaza. However, Netanyahu is facing mounting pressure from hardliners within his government to turn down this deal.

During a recent briefing, Israeli officials described their military approach as “gradual, accurate, and targeted,” according to the NYT. This comes amid a backdrop of calls from Arab nations for Hamas to relinquish its weapons and authority in Gaza.

Netanyahu has previously sought a ceasefire agreement, but has been met with resistance, particularly regarding a plan he presented back in July. His latest proposal appears to echo earlier demands involving the release of hostages.

As of June, it was estimated that around 50 hostages remain with Hamas.

The Israeli government is contemplating a complete occupation of the Gaza Strip following series of unsuccessful peace negotiations, yet this idea has its critics, including some within the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). They argue that an occupation would be impractical and could jeopardize both soldiers’ lives and those of the remaining hostages.

IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir reportedly warned earlier this month that such an occupation would likely put lives in great danger.

Arab nations have stepped up their efforts in peace talks concerning Gaza, with the Arab League advocating for disarmament among militant groups and a reassessment of their role in governance.

Back in Israel, recent protests have intensified pressures on Netanyahu, with reports indicating that hundreds of thousands have taken to the streets regarding the ongoing ceasefire discussions.

The IDF has not provided immediate comments on these developments.
