Injury Rocking Indiana Fever’s Roster

During a recent matchup, Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham faced a season-ending knee injury that has raised some eyebrows, especially regarding her connection with Connecticut Sun’s Bria Hartley. Following the injury, which occurred during a game where the Fever narrowly defeated the Sun 99-93 in overtime, Cunningham’s mother took to social media. In her posts, she made some, well, let’s say less-than-flattering comments about Hartley, labeling her as a “disgruntled player.”

On Tuesday, the Fever confirmed that Cunningham would be sidelined for the rest of the season due to the knee injury sustained when she fell awkwardly in the second quarter. It’s certainly a tough blow for the team, who have faced quite a few challenges this season.

Cunningham later addressed the situation in her podcast, saying she advised her mom to delete the posts. “I mean, Bria and I are actually friends. I don’t think she intended to hurt me,” Cunningham expressed. She emphasized, “It was just a basketball play, and sometimes those things happen.” This perspective sheds a more nuanced light on the injury—not all injuries come from some malicious intent.

Confirming the extent of her injury, Cunningham mentioned she had torn her MCL and would be undergoing surgery soon. “If you have to hurt your knee, this is the best-case scenario,” she noted. Yet, it’s still disheartening, especially for someone passionate about the sport.

This season has already been rough for the Fever. Besides Cunningham’s injury, they’ve also had to deal with the loss of star guard Kate Linklark for most of the regular season, along with additional sidelined players due to serious injuries. “Honestly, with all the adversity we’ve faced, it’s been quite a ride,” Cunningham said, reflecting on the broader struggles the team has encountered.
