GOP Representative Mike Lawler claims New York Democrats are hypocritical about redistricting

Conflict Over Rezoning Efforts in Texas

A Republican Congressman from New York has criticized Democratic leaders for their hypocritical responses to zoning initiatives occurring in Texas and other Republican states.

Representative Mike Lawler, who represents a district that flipped in the 2024 elections away from Donald Trump, has expressed concerns over the growing rezoning conflict throughout the country. In an interview, he stated, “I don’t entirely agree with this movement,” adding, “But we need to take a broader view. New York made significant rezoning changes last year.” He went on to express his frustration, saying, “It’s amusing how Democrats, like Governor Kathy Hochul and leaders Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer, blame Texas for actions they themselves took last year.”

GOP Strategies Amid Congressional Shutdown Discussions

The process of congressional redistricting varies by state; while some states rely heavily on their legislatures, others, like New York, take guidance from independent agencies such as the Rezoning Committee. New York’s Bipartisan Constituency Commission implemented a new map in early 2024, which notably affected three congressional seats in upstate and central New York. Among these, two shifted from Republican to Democratic in the last election, with the third maintaining its Democratic status.

This outcome was celebrated by Democrats, particularly after a New York Supreme Court ruling mandated a new congressional map for the 2024 elections, following losses of several suburban seats in 2022. Although shifts occurred previously, the latest redistricting saw little change in competitive landscapes.

Lawler criticized New York’s actions, saying, “They’re attempting to manipulate seats as they’ve done with the appeals courts, even leveraging dubious court orders.” He found it quite ironic that Democrats position themselves as more principled while engaging in similar tactics. “Texas, meanwhile, has legally navigated their rezoning,” he noted.

Furthermore, Lawler raised concerns regarding the impact of such constituency battles on national competitiveness. “These congressional districts have become increasingly independent, leaving few truly contested races,” he explained. He suggested that more competitive districts could encourage congressmembers to better represent the wider voter base.

In response to these observations, Lawler announced plans to propose legislation aimed at banning partisan gerrymandering nationwide. He views this as part of a broader reform initiative to rectify longstanding issues within Congress.

Ongoing Redistricting Efforts Across States

“We need to address additional reforms, including term limits for Congress members,” he continued, adding, “It’s important to ensure that illegal immigrants are not counted in the census.” Lawler expressed that many Americans would likely support these ideas.

In reaction to Lawler’s remarks, a spokesperson for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) conveyed a perspective on the evolving council map in Texas, which could lead to five additional congressional seats in 2026. Meanwhile, leaders in California are also advocating for a new map to further bolster Democratic representation, though various states, including New York, have not dismissed similar strategies.

Attempts for comments were made to representatives Jeffries, Schumer, and Hochul but went unanswered.
