Princess Elizabeth’s Studies at Harvard Secured Amid Uncertainty
Princess Elizabeth, who is set to become the queen of Belgium one day, will be able to continue her studies at Harvard University this fall, despite ongoing concerns regarding international student admissions.
The 23-year-old royal is working towards a master’s degree in public policy at this prestigious Ivy League institution. After finishing her first year in May, she found herself at risk of having to return to Belgium due to recent federal funding cuts aimed at limiting the enrollment of foreign students.
A Belgian journalist with inside knowledge confirmed Elizabeth’s plans after a judge in Massachusetts ruled that the federal government could not alter the student visa program of the university.
“There’s no specific reason why she won’t be able to return to Harvard in September,” Belgian royal journalist Wim DeHandschter told a magazine recently.
Sources indicated that the Belgian palace remains hopeful about her situation, but they also mentioned that, if needed, her research could be conducted online.
According to DeHandschutter, palace officials are navigating some delicate diplomatic issues, especially with President Trump’s directives.
He added, “I believe the Royal Palace is keeping things low-key to avoid any uproar or scandal. They likely want to maintain good relations with the United States. The restrictions on foreign academic enrollment are a matter for heads of state, including King Philip.”
Despite the challenges, DeHandschutter noted that the palace was relieved a resolution seems to be in sight.
“They found themselves in a tough spot,” he elaborated. “Even if an exception is made for Elizabeth, she’s royalty, and that could invite criticism related to how the royal family is perceived in this situation.”
Elizabeth, who also holds the title of Duchess of Brabant, is among countless international students eagerly awaiting the outcomes of these decisions.
Initially, the Belgian royal palace had been cautious in their statements about the situation, indicating that it was premature to predict the results of the ongoing conflict.
“Princess Elizabeth has just wrapped up her first year. We’re assessing the impacts of the current administration’s policies,” said Lore Vandoorne, a spokesperson. “At this time, we’re trying to keep things calm.”
As the heir to the Belgian throne, Elizabeth is the oldest of four children born to King Philip and Queen Mathilde. Before Harvard, she earned a degree in history and politics from Oxford University in England.
