Some crime victims in DC have been enduring this for 40 years, according to the US Marshals chief.

The Director of U.S. Marshals Service, Gadi Seralta, mentioned on Wednesday that President Trump’s acquisition of Washington, D.C. could help reduce the long-standing crimes that residents have faced for over four decades.

Seralta emphasized, “These are individuals who have endured this for 40 years, living in constant fear.” He shared these thoughts during an evening segment on News Nation’s Cuomo show.

“This is the capital of the United States. No one should feel that it’s a place where they could be kidnapped, robbed, or assaulted,” he added.

Law enforcement, including national security personnel and local police, reported over 500 arrests and the confiscation of 75 firearms aimed at enhancing public safety.

“It’s impossible to measure how many lives we’ve potentially saved by taking away 75 firearms from individuals who have no valid reason to possess them,” Seralta remarked.

He also pointed out that five murderers had been removed from the streets.

Additionally, some individuals are facing detention through federal immigration enforcement operations occurring both locally and across the nation.

However, this display of law enforcement activity has met with pushback from community leaders who are uncomfortable with how it has been portrayed online.

City Council member Brian Nadeau criticized federal agents for using standard traffic stops as opportunities for interrogation. “These agents are not trained in the District’s regulations. They don’t understand our community,” she stated in response to a recent viral incident.

“This represents federal overreach, which isn’t enhancing safety in D.C. It’s more about exerting power and instilling fear,” she continued.

In spite of the backlash, Seralta affirmed that federal operations would continue, supported by President Trump, who plans to participate in local patrols on Thursday night.

“The law enforcement personnel here are dedicated to making D.C. safer… the city certainly needs assistance,” he acknowledged, noting that nearly half of the arrests are related to immigration issues.

“President Trump recognized the situation and took action. I’m proud that he chose the U.S. service to lead this initiative alongside 20 other law enforcement agencies, working in concert to achieve effective results,” Seralta concluded.
