Maduro’s Provocative Remarks Amid US Naval Activity
Nicolas Maduro, the Venezuelan leader, has made a series of provocative comments as US naval vessels reportedly approach the coasts of several South American nations, according to Reuters.
On Wednesday, Maduro hinted at “odd and strange threats from a declining empire,” asserting that Venezuela “protects our oceans, our sky, and our lands.” This statement followed reports of US forces deploying in the Southern Caribbean to confront drug cartels, with three Ages-class destroyers said to be stationed near Venezuela, as mentioned by two unnamed sources.
In addition, about 4,000 sailors and Marines are being sent to tackle cartel operations, another source indicated to Reuters.
It was reported that in the past, Trump had permitted military actions against drug cartels, though it’s unclear exactly when this decision was made. Back in February, the Trump administration labeled many Latin American cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.
Requests for comment from the Department of Defense and the State Department went unanswered.
Maduro has also mobilized millions of militia members to secure the nation’s territory. In related news, Attorney General Pam Bondi raised the bounty for information leading to Maduro’s capture from $15 million to $50 million, emphasizing the threat he poses as a significant figure in narcotics trafficking.
“He is one of the world’s biggest narcotic traffickers and a threat to our national security,” Bondi stated, underscoring that under Trump’s leadership, Maduro will face justice for his alleged crimes.
Latin American cartels are largely accountable for the surge in fentanyl-related deaths in the United States, affecting countless lives each year.
