Chip Roy Announces Run for Texas Attorney General
U.S. Representative Chip Roy, a Republican from Texas, made it known on Thursday that he is launching a campaign to become the next Attorney General of Texas.
In a campaign video posted on X, Roy emphasized the importance of preserving the state’s legacy of “freedom, freedom, self-determination.”
He mentioned, “Texas has a long and proud tradition of standing up to protect our homes, our freedoms, and our community.” Roy aims to uphold this legacy through the Attorney General’s office, asserting that he isn’t afraid to fight for Texas. His statement concluded with a call to action: “#LiveFree.”
This election is set for November 2026, coinciding with a time when Republicans will be defending a limited number of seats in the House during a midterm election. The primary election is slated for March.
Current Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton could seek a fourth term but has not announced plans for reelection. In April, he revealed a significant challenge for the 2026 Senate seat, which has ignited tensions between two influential Republicans whose roles could impact both the state and the nation.
As the policy chair for the far-right House Freedom Caucus, Roy expressed pride in representing the 21st Congressional District, highlighting efforts to support President Trump’s agenda and professional satisfaction in his work. He shared that, despite his satisfaction, it was time for him to pursue a new role, especially after witnessing the challenges faced by Texans during recent natural disasters.
Roy articulated his intention to bring his experience as a federal prosecutor to the role of Attorney General, stating a desire to advocate for Texas from within the state itself.
“Texas is under attack from cross-border politicians, radical leftists, and out-of-touch foreign corporations that threaten our security and way of life,” Roy asserted. “It’s time to take a stand. As Attorney General, I will fight every day for our God-given rights, my family, and the future of Texas.”
