Russia Launches One of the Most Extensive Air Attacks on Ukraine During the Conflict

Kiev, Ukraine – Major Russian Air Assault

Russia executed one of its most significant air offensives this year over Ukraine, deploying 574 drones along with 40 ballistic and cruise missiles overnight, according to the Ukrainian Air Force. This surge in attacks occurs alongside renewed diplomatic efforts to halt a conflict that has persisted for three years now.

The primary focus of the attacks appeared to be in the western regions, which, it seems, have received substantial military support from Ukraine’s allies. Reports indicate that this assault resulted in at least one fatality and left 15 others injured.

This year marks Russia’s third largest air campaign to date, with a trend of targeting civilian areas in previous assaults.

The strikes coincided with a new US-led initiative aimed at achieving peace following the invasion that began in February 2022. Last week, US President Donald Trump discussed the ongoing war with Russian President Vladimir Putin, following meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders earlier this week.

Since those White House discussions, Russia has launched nearly 1,000 long-range drones and missiles into Ukraine.

Leaders from Ukraine and Europe have criticized Putin for his apparent stagnation regarding peace talks, including offers for a ceasefire and Zelensky’s willingness to hold discussions with Russian officials. The Kremlin has responded in a measured manner to these diplomatic overtures.

Zelensky condemned the late-night assault, characterizing it as an act “as if nothing had changed.” Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defense asserted that the aim of the strikes was to target facilities within Ukraine’s military industrial sector, claiming they were focused on drone factories, missile launch sites, and troop assembly areas. Russia has consistently denied any attacks on civilian structures.

Zelensky remarked that there have been no signs of genuine negotiations from Moscow to conclude the war. He called for the international community to exert greater pressure on Russia, advocating for stricter sanctions and tariffs.

In response, Ukraine has been utilizing domestically produced long-range drones to target critical infrastructure within Russia that supports its military operations. Recently, Ukraine successfully struck an oil refinery, resulting in skyrocketing wholesale gasoline prices in Russia.

Almost all missiles launched overnight originated from Russian territory and reached deep into western Ukraine, close to the Hungarian border.

This western area is quite removed from the ongoing battles in the eastern and southern fronts, where a brutal war of attrition has led to the loss of tens of thousands of soldiers on both sides.

In the western city of Lviv, one individual was killed, and three others injured as a result of the strikes that damaged various structures, including homes, a kindergarten, and administrative buildings. Prosecutors noted that three Russian cruise missiles utilizing cluster munitions struck the city.

An electronics factory, a major US investment located near the Hungarian border, was also hit during the assault, according to Andy Hander, president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Ukraine. Shockingly, the plant was operational with 600 night shift workers at the time, leading to injuries among them. Hander also mentioned that Russian attacks have harmed assets belonging to about 600 Chamber of Commerce members.

“The message is clear: Russia is not seeking peace. Instead, they are targeting American businesses in Ukraine and causing significant disruption,” Hander stated.

In remarks made on Wednesday, which extended into Thursday’s events, Zelensky noted that a comprehensive meeting would be organized to determine what security support allies might provide.

Details are being coordinated by national security advisers and military officials. Zelensky hopes to have plans finalized by the end of next week and expressed readiness to meet with Putin in person for the first time since the full-scale invasion.

Zelensky suggested that this meeting might take place in a trilateral format, possibly involving Trump. Discussions are ongoing regarding suitable locations for the talks, with Switzerland, Austria, and Turkey being potential candidates.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov mentioned on Wednesday that he is crafting security arrangements pertaining to Ukraine without Moscow’s participation, according to state-run Ria Novosti.

During a meeting with Trump in the Oval Office on Monday, Zelensky aimed to convince the US president that the situation on the battlefield was as dire for Ukraine as Putin had portrayed. He pointed out a discrepancy in the US frontline map, indicating that it inaccurately depicted Russian territorial gains.
