Moscow Police Release Edited Bodycam Video from Idaho Student Murders
Moscow police have shared a heavily edited bodycam video that captures the initial response to the crime scene at 1122 King Road, where a University of Idaho student was murdered.
Madison Morgen’s mother attempted to prevent the release of images and videos from the crime scene in court, while Ethan Chapin’s parents supported her plea for a temporary restraining order with a declaration to the judge. The hearing was initially set for Thursday but has since been postponed until next week.
On November 13, 2022, around noon, officers arrived to find a tense atmosphere in an off-campus home rented by a group of undergraduate students.
The responding officers conducted a thorough search and discovered four victims deceased. The nearly hour-long video, first obtained by Law and Crime, includes footage of the scene and the victims’ bodies.
Police Chief Claims Coberger Mentioned Kaylee Goncalves During the Attack
In the edited video, the faces of the surviving witnesses were blurred. One key witness, Dylan Mortensen, was a roommate of the victims. She encountered the suspect, Brian Coberger, before fleeing through a rear sliding door and was among the first to speak with the police after securing the scene.
Her account has evolved over time. After hearing a scream from her roommate Kaylee Goncalves, she described how cold it was in November, noting that she was in a T-shirt and barefoot.
Court Blocks Further Release of Material from the Victims’ Bedroom
“I kept calling her name, but she didn’t answer,” Mortensen recounted. “Then I saw the man.” It appears that Goncalves likely never reached the stairs, as she was fatally attacked while in her second-floor bedroom near her best friend, Madison Morgen.
The victims were Goncalves, Morgen, Zana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin, all students 20 years old or younger. Kernodle may have struggled with Coberger, as she sustained severe defensive wounds during the attack.
Documents Reveal Concerns Over Stalking and Behavioral Issues
“I heard someone crying in the bathroom, and another voice saying she was fine,” Mortensen described. “I kept calling her name, but there was no response.” She detailed her brief encounter with Coberger.
“I saw this guy—he wasn’t very tall—but he was wearing a mask that covered his forehead and mouth.” She recalled feeling an unsettling sense while hearing him say he wanted to help.
The officers were reportedly shocked by what they discovered inside the residence. Coberger has since pleaded guilty, receiving four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.
