Cuomo Critiques Mamdani’s Position in NYC Mayoral Race

Independent New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo challenged his democratic socialist rival, Zoran Mamdani, labeling Mamdani’s stance as “anti-business” during a recent interview with Fox News anchor Martha McCallum.

“Mamdani’s position simply isn’t viable in New York,” Cuomo stated. Poll results from Siena University suggest Cuomo has around 44%, while Mamdani is leading the race by nearly 20 points. Cuomo’s support puts him in second place among other contenders, with about 25% backing.

Cuomo hasn’t confirmed if he plans to exit the race. Meanwhile, current Mayor Eric Adams criticized Cuomo, claiming he has enacted “dangerous laws,” referencing issues from cannabis to bail reforms, which have led to significant problems, including nursing home fatalities.

Cuomo expressed skepticism about Mamdani’s lasting appeal, saying it will “dramatically drop.” He argued that voters would become less supportive as they learn more about Mamdani. “I don’t think you know who he is or what he represents,” Cuomo remarked.

Despite unfavorable odds in the mayoral contest, Mamdani shows no signs of withdrawing. Cuomo believes he could become a stronger candidate among Republicans and independents by repositioning himself within the Democratic Party, emphasizing the importance of business in the city.

“You can’t be anti-business. New York City thrives on its businesses,” he pointed out. Cuomo affirmed his beliefs in law and order and capitalism, contrasting those with Mamdani’s socialist views, claiming this makes him more competitive.

When asked by McCallum if he desires support from former President Donald Trump, Cuomo replied somewhat ambiguously, saying, “Yes, no, it’s definitely not.” There was a previous exchange between Trump and Mamdani, with Trump labeling Mamdani as a “100% communist madman” after a democratic win.

Cuomo recalled his last contact with Trump, which involved wishing him well after a serious incident he faced. Both politicians had a tense history, particularly related to policies during the Covid-19 pandemic; Cuomo was accused of contributing to nursing home deaths by allowing Covid-positive patients into facilities.

The Justice Department is currently looking into whether Cuomo misled Congress regarding his handling of pandemic-related statistics and nursing home accountability.
