Former School Counselor Faces Serious Charges

A former counselor from a Colorado school, who was once named “Counselor of the Year,” is now under investigation for allegedly sexually assaulting a student over 100 times. Authorities have reported that she threatened to kill the victim if they reported the abuse.

On Tuesday, Fort Collins released a statement declaring that it suspects the individual had inappropriate interactions with students during her tenure at the Poudre School District, which lasted from 2007 to 2024.

“These allegations are very troubling,” the police said.

After looking into the matter, detectives identified the accused as 40-year-old Cassandra Poncellow. The investigation found that she engaged in inappropriate relationships with students, committing multiple sexual assaults outside of school premises. The victim, who was a minor during the incidents, is now an adult, identified as female.

Reports indicated that the victim and Poncellow met at the counseling office in high school. According to court documents, she allegedly hosted a sleepover at her home with the victim and even had unsupervised interactions in her office.

The accusations surfaced after being reported through a resource called Safe2Tell, designed for anonymously sharing safety concerns by students, parents, and staff. In April 2023, the Colorado Department of Human Services received claims about Poncellow assaulting a student, although the allegations had reportedly begun “a few years” earlier.

Despite the growing concerns, Poncellow continued her role as a counselor until her resignation on September 6, 2024. When the district was asked about the connection to the Safe2Tell report or whether she took a leave, they cited privacy laws and could not provide specifics.

During the inquiry, the police initially did not find enough evidence to continue pursuing the case. However, that changed last month when the victim approached authorities again, stating the assaults had occurred over 100 times at Poncellow’s residence. The victim also reported that Poncellow had threatened self-harm if she ever spoke out about their relationship.

The report included Poncellow saying, “If I told anyone, I would commit suicide.” She seemed to express embarrassment over the alleged relationships.

In the arrest documentation, she admitted that their physical and sexual relations were inappropriate, acknowledging a lack of boundaries and power dynamics. Law enforcement is concerned that there may be additional victims or witnesses related to this case.

Poncellow was booked at the Larimer County Jail, facing several felonies, including sexual assault on a child and sexual exploitation. In a statement, the authorities noted that they are dedicated to the well-being of the victims and the thorough investigation of this case.

The Poudre School District expressed its concern, stating, “These allegations are deeply troubling.” They reiterated their commitment to cooperating with the investigation, emphasizing that student safety is their top priority.

Poncellow was recognized as the “Counselor of the Year” by the Colorado School Counseling Association and was a finalist for a national award in 2018. Anyone with more information about the case is urged to contact the local authorities.
