Illinois Governor Criticizes Trump’s Crime Strategy
JB Pritzker, the Democratic governor of Illinois, has spoken out against President Donald Trump’s comments regarding a potential crackdown on crime in Chicago.
In a thread on X, Pritzker accused Trump and the Republican Party of attempting to “divert the pain they are causing” through their policies, including tariffs. He pointed to the president’s use of the National Guard in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., claiming that Trump is treating these cities as “test sites for authoritarian overreach.”
Pritzker stated, “When Donald Trump tries to create chaos to distract from his problems, it becomes clear what he’s doing.” He continued, “Trump and Republicans are trying to deflect from the issues they’ve caused, like tariffs that raise prices on goods and undermine essential medical and food support.”
He also remarked, “After using cities like Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. in this manner, Trump seems to embrace the idea of intervening in other states and cities.”
According to Breitbart News, during an announcement in the Oval Office, Trump discussed his plans related to public safety in connection with the FIFA World Cup.
Nick Gilbertson of Breitbart News reported:
While showing the drawings for the FIFA World Cup, Trump stated that he intends to apply similar public safety measures seen in D.C. to cities like Chicago and New York.
“This is going to enhance safety,” Trump said. “Chicago is grappling with issues and has an ineffective mayor.”
“We’re going to fix this. Chicago could be the next city we focus on. It’s not complicated. The citizens of Chicago, even the Vice President, are calling out for us. They’re showing support,” he stated.
Pritzker contended that “Trump’s objective is to instill fear in communities” and to undermine current public safety initiatives in order to misuse “his power.” He accused the president of “staging events for media attention.”
“We don’t engage in such tactics,” Pritzker said. “Our dedication to law and order is yielding results. Crime rates are down. Last year, homicides dropped by over 30% in Chicago, thanks to initiatives like the CIV program.”
“Local law enforcement knows the neighborhoods well; they live in these areas too. They are not in favor of these measures, and we will keep working closely with them,” Pritzker added.
Since Trump announced calls for invoking Section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rules Act, it has led to the Metropolitan Police Department being placed under federal oversight and the National Guard being mobilized to address crime in D.C., which has reportedly contributed to a 22% reduction in violent crime.
As noted by Axios, “The Posse Comitatus Act restricts military involvement in law enforcement unless authorized by the Constitution or specific legislation.”
