This weekend, the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) intensified its attacks on Hamas positions in northern Gaza, even amidst escalating international protests accusing Israel of “genocide” in its pursuit of military success.
The IDF shared video footage showing operations in the Jabariya region near Gaza City, a significant stronghold for Hamas. The aim seems to be consolidating control over the last parts of Gaza that have seen little attention in the ongoing conflict.

According to an IDF statement:
Recently, troops from the 401st Brigade, part of the 162nd Division, have resumed combat in the Jabariya region of the northern Gaza Strip.
These troops are focused on diminishing the military capabilities of Hamas. They are actively dismantling both underground and surface infrastructures used by the organization, targeting terrorists and enhancing operational oversight in the area.
Such military activities not only limit Hamas’s operations but expand combat efforts to new areas, reducing the terrorists’ ability to regroup.
The army has uncovered underground tunnels used for terrorism, taken out key figures, and dismantled military frameworks that Hamas has utilized to plan and execute attacks on IDF forces.
IDF forces operating under the Southern Command will persist in their efforts against terrorist entities in Gaza to ensure Israel’s security.
The IDF has been cautious near a critical area in Gaza City, largely due to concerns for the remaining Israeli hostages, estimated to be around 50, though there might be as few as 20.
Should a hostage exchange not materialize in return for a ceasefire, the IDF is looking towards a comprehensive strategy to dismantle Hamas completely.
International critics have charged Israel with “genocide,” highlighting the tens of thousands of casualties in Gaza. They argue there’s a lack of clarity distinguishing between Hamas militants and civilians, and point to Hamas’s tactics that put Palestinian lives at risk. There have been claims of misinformation regarding starvation, despite substantial aid efforts. Israel’s strategy seems to involve temporarily relocating Palestinians outside of Gaza City for their safety.
Israel plans to proceed with its dual objectives of defeating Hamas and securing the release of hostages, though these ambitions may be at odds with one another, complicating the situation.
