Bronx Mom’s Graduation Turns Tragic After Daughter is Hit by Stray Bullet
What was supposed to be a day of celebration for a Bronx mom took a horrific turn when she learned her teenage daughter had been struck in the face by a stray bullet.
Jennifer Talbott expressed her joy on social media about her PhD graduation, calling it the greatest achievement of her life. “You have proven to people that despite everything you exist and you can do that,” she shared, only to later reflect sadly, “But the celebration day has become my worst nightmare day.” Her 17-year-old daughter was seriously injured in Baychester.
The incident occurred during a gang-related shootout around 5:30 PM at a basketball tournament near Haffen Park, where five individuals were shot. According to police, a 32-year-old man was killed, and three others were injured.
Talbott mentioned that her daughter was understandably upset about missing her mother’s graduation ceremony but was calling to check in throughout the day.
While at a post-graduation gala in Connecticut, Talbott received the devastating news about her daughter.
“When I got to the hospital, I saw my daughter in the hospital bed, with a tracheostomy tube, half of her head shaved, and the bullet lodged in her eye patch. Her head was twice its normal size,” Talbott recalled.
She continued, “But by God’s grace and prayers, they called me this morning and said she would need a blood transfusion.” Talbott had earned her degree from Heartbible International University that day, while her daughter had tried to reach out multiple times.
“She couldn’t come, and I felt bad, telling her, ‘You should be here,'” Talbott recounted. “But I had to hang up because I was in the middle of graduating.”
That call was the last conversation they had before the tragic event unfolded.
This report refrains from disclosing the teen’s name due to her age.
Authorities revealed that four suspects were taken into custody, though charges have not yet been announced.
