Mayor Eric Adams Draws Attention Over Campaign Issues
Mayor Eric Adams found himself in the spotlight for various reasons related to his campaign. A mix-up stirred excitement on social media when his team mistakenly linked him to Zoran Mamdani, a candidate associated with more radical views, primarily because Adams didn’t attempt a bench press during a public event.
The campaign’s messaging was somewhat unclear: “67 vs. 33. A life of hard work versus one of privilege. Well, the results are telling,” stated Adams’ campaign site, after Mamdani experienced a setback. It was a bit of a humiliation for them, honestly.
In a tweet that humorously contrasted himself with Mamdani, Adams made a quip about the weight of responsibilities—suggesting that Mamdani couldn’t manage the fiscal load, stating, “The weight of work is too heavy for a ‘Mum Scrony’. All he can lift is your taxes.”
At 64 years old, Adams is gearing up for his 65th birthday on September 1.
City reporter Katie Honan pointed out a miscalculation regarding the mayor’s age, which Adams’ team quickly corrected. A spokesperson for the campaign later explained it was just an innocent mistake, emphasizing that the mayor had never lied about his age.
On another front, Governor David Patterson, who endorsed Adams recently, commented on the ongoing corruption controversy involving some of the mayor’s aides. Reports suggested that Ingrid Lewis Martin, a key aide, was implicated in a bribery scheme, exchanging $75,000 in unethical transactions.
Additionally, during a campaign event, a volunteer allegedly handed reporter Honan a bag of potato chips stuffed with $300 in cash. It’s certainly raised eyebrows.
“I hold a lot of respect for the mayor,” Patterson said during a radio show, reflecting on his support for Adams in the past. He added that the mounting issues, including the recent scandal, have not improved Adams’ standing in polling.
“It’s unfortunate,” Patterson continued. “Every time he seems to gain some momentum, something like this pulls him back.”
