Daniil Medvedev confronts umpire after cameraman causes US Open delay

A chaotic incident occurred at the US Open when a photographer entered the court during a match between Daniil Medvedev and Benjamin Bonzi. This unexpected disruption led to nearly a seven-minute delay as Medvedev tried to manage his emotions.

Bonzi was ahead with scores of 6-3, 7-5, and 5-4 when the photographer entered the arena for reasons that remain unclear. This prompted umpire Greg Allensworth to halt the game at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

In a dramatic moment, Medvedev challenged the umpire, questioning the situation: “Are you a man? Are you a man? Why are you trembling? What’s wrong? He wants to leave.” His frustration didn’t go unnoticed as he encouraged the crowd to express their dissatisfaction with the decision.

“Wait, not now,” shouted Allensworth. “Please get off the court,” he added, attempting to regain control of the match.

The umpire insisted that Bonzi was entitled to a first serve due to the interference, which left Medvedev even more agitated. He confronted the chair umpire, voicing his concern about the disruption and what it meant for the match proceedings.

Frustrated, the booing crowd persisted for several minutes, and Bonzi hesitated to serve until the audience quieted down. It seems they were unified in their chants for a second serve.

Despite the interruptions, Medvedev managed to regroup and continued the match, even battling past match points as he pushed forward.
