ICE Detains Kilmer Abrego Garcia for Deportation
On Monday morning, Kilmer Abrego Garcia, referred to as the “Maryland Man” by some, was detained by Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) for deportation purposes to Uganda.
According to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security, Garcia was arrested on August 25 as an unlawful immigrant from El Salvador. He’s currently in the process of being removed from the United States.
Chief Christa Noem remarked, “We are currently addressing his deportation. The administration is taking a firm stance against illegal immigration. This individual, a self-identified member of the MS-13 gang, has a troubling history of violence, including trafficking and domestic abuse.”
Reuters reported that Abrego was previously deported to El Salvador in March despite a 2019 U.S. immigration court ruling that he wouldn’t be sent back due to the serious risk of gang violence he would face there. He had returned to El Salvador in June, only to be arrested again for transporting undocumented immigrants, a charge to which he has pleaded not guilty.
Following a 2019 court order, a judge had decided against his deportation to El Salvador again, suggesting instead he might be sent to a “safe third country” that has agreed to accept deportees.
Despite suspicions surrounding him, some Democratic supporters have rallied around illegal immigrants. There have been multiple allegations concerning his activities with the MS-13 gang and human trafficking.
The situation has turned into a political challenge for Democrats. An opinion survey from Harvard/Harris indicates that about 62% of registered voters consider Garcia a probable MS-13 gang member.
The Biden administration and GOP lawmakers seem eager to keep the media focused on Garcia’s situation, as it sheds light on wider issues such as crime and economic impacts linked to illegal immigration.
Since May, there has been a notable lack of coverage from Democratic-aligned media concerning the legal matters surrounding the “Maryland Man,” with discussions often shifting to broader topics regarding immigrant rights and deportations.
