Following an FBI raid on his home last week, former National Security Adviser John Bolton has voiced strong criticism of President Donald Trump’s approach to Ukraine, describing it as filled with “confusion, hurry, and chaos.” He noted that negotiations between the U.S. and some European nations appear to be struggling, alongside Trump’s efforts for a Nobel Peace Prize.
Bolton argues that Trump’s push for a swift peace deal is “inevitably” destined to fail, referencing an August 15 meeting that he claims saw negotiations progress at an “almost unprecedented” speed. He also condemned Trump’s abrupt decision to revoke new sanctions against Russia and instead call for a ceasefire, suggesting this only underscored the ineffective diplomatic strategy.
The former UN ambassador highlighted contradictions within the administration, pointing out that while Pentagon officials have told Ukraine they should attack targets within Russia, at the same time, the Pentagon has been blocking Ukraine from carrying out such strikes. Reports indicate that the Pentagon recently denied Ukraine long-range missile systems.
Meanwhile, countries like India find themselves left in a difficult position due to new U.S. tariffs, while nations like Russia and China seem to benefit from a lack of restrictions, according to Bolton.
He believes Trump’s recent actions have likely hindered the chances for peace and fair reconciliation in Ukraine. Bolton likened the situation to a historical moment involving President Richard Nixon, questioning why Trump would want to align himself with a president infamous for resigning in disgrace.
Bolton served as Trump’s national security adviser from 2018 until their eventual parting of ways. Reports suggest the FBI raid may be connected to investigations into classified documents.
