A significant dust storm hit Nevada’s Burning Man Festival over the weekend, causing chaos for early participants and leaving others stuck in stop-and-go traffic for as long as eight hours.
The National Weather Service had warned about the storm and mentioned a rapidly moving “spray wall.” However, by Saturday, many burners had already arrived in Black Rock City.
On Sunday, attendees had to contend with lingering effects from the previous night, with supplies dwindling.
Before the storm struck, people scrambled to salvage their belongings, crowding into RVs. As the winds surged and dust engulfed the festival, spectators watched helplessly as tents and makeshift homes were swept away.
Videos from attendees showed several people desperately trying to stabilize metal structures as the winds intensified.
The winds reached astonishing speeds of 45 miles per hour, according to a spokesperson for the festival.
Campsites were devastated, and many art installations were lost, including a significant inflatable piece called “Black Cloud,” created by Ukrainian artists and meant to symbolize the war’s threat.
On Sunday night, festival officials took precautions, closing the gates to Black Rock City and halting movement in and out of the area while they weathered the storm. Authorities recommended everyone avoid the roads.
By Monday morning, the gates reopened, and flights resumed. A committed burner rose early to assist in repairing camps and gathering lost items.
With new attendees finally able to enter, traffic along the eight-mile road to the festival was severely backed up for hours.
While the worst of the weather seemed to be over, more thunderstorms were expected in Black Rock City from Monday evening through Wednesday. The National Weather Service also cautioned about possible “monsoon moisture” leading to minor flooding risks until Thursday.
Despite the challenges, festival-goers have faced harsh conditions before; last year’s event saw over 1,000 injuries throughout, and one death was reported.
The previous festival had a serious incident leaving one person nearly paralyzed, yet this year, the spirit remains resilient.
At least one arrest occurred this year when an individual attempted to bring a large quantity of illegal substances into the festival.
Running until September 1st, Burning Man typically draws around 70,000 attendees annually.
