Tennis Highlights from the US Open
Two-time semi-finalist Frances Tiafoe smoothly advanced to the second round of the US Open, defeating Yoshihito Nishioka with a score of 6-3, 7-6 (6), 6-3 at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday night.
It took him less than 27 hours to secure his spot for Round 2, where he will face fellow American Martin Damm, looking to avenge last year’s semi-final loss.
“It’s always great to play in this court,” Tiafoe remarked in a post-match chat. “Being back for another year of this amazing tournament is incredible. It’s really the best tournament in the world, and it’s always an honor to play at Arthur Ashe. I’m just so happy to be back.”
Tiafoe, sporting a stylish all-red ensemble from his partnership with Lululemon, showcased an impressive performance.
The No. 17 seed served up 19 aces compared to Nishioka’s five, and his 51 winners completely overshadowed his opponent’s 26.
He dominated with his serves, even scoring 12 consecutive points at one point. His average serve speed was 116 mph, with a peak of 135 mph.
“The crowd support is just insane,” he noted. “You always perform better in places where you’ve had success. I’ve won a lot of matches on this court over the years.”
Meanwhile, two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova announced her retirement after a disappointing first-round loss to France’s Diane Parry, with a score of 6-1, 6-0.
With a career spanning 19 years, Kvitova, who won 31 titles and reached a career-high No. 2 ranking, was visibly emotional as she left the court, having embraced her husband and coach, Kiri Vanek.
“I was really hoping to put on a better show today,” she expressed during a post-match interview just after a video tribute to her career. “It’s tough knowing it might be my last match, and that was emotionally really difficult.” She added, “Thank you, New York, for this wonderful Grand Slam. I’m so glad to be here for my last dance.”
Cameron Norrie moved forward to the second round after American Sebastian Korda had to retire due to an injury.
Coleman Wong made history as Hong Kong’s first player to win a match in a Grand Slam main draw, defeating American Alexander Kovacevic in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5, 7-6 (4). He will face Adam Walton next.
Liudmila Samsonova fought back from a one-set deficit to achieve her 30th Grand Slam victory, winning against Yue Yuan with a score of 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
