Mamdani’s Campaign Fundraising Insights

Zohran Mamdani, a candidate for mayor in New York City, faced some challenges while attempting to bench press at a recent event in Brooklyn.

According to data from the New York City Campaign Finance Committee, over half of the $1 million raised for Mamdani’s campaign this summer came from outside the city. The recent announcement detailed that his democratic socialist campaign raised a total of $1,051,204.85 during July and August.

The report highlighted that 8,628 unique donors contributed during this period, with about 53.5%—or $562,422—originating from outside New York. Notably, a mere one in eight of Mamdani’s unique supporters resides in New York, with the vast majority, approximately 87%, being from elsewhere.

Mamdani recently secured the NYC Democratic primary with a 12-point lead against Andrew Cuomo, who is also in the race.

Cuomo, the former governor, remarked in an interview that while Mamdani faced challenges during the June primary, the general election would attract a different demographic of voters, including moderate Democrats, Republicans, and independents. Oddly enough, a significant portion—over half—of Cuomo’s donations also came from outside New York City.

Sliwa, another candidate, has raised a good portion of his funds from within the city, with approximately 66% of his $407,332 coming from local contributors. Meanwhile, the current mayor, Eric Adams, reported raising $420,886, with 60% of that from New York residents.

Mamdani’s campaign has reignited efforts throughout the city, utilizing over 2,000 volunteers who have knocked on more than 50,000 doors. Recently, more than 4,000 individuals participated in the Mamdani Scavenger Hunt, which is being described as an event that reflects a love for New York.

A campaign spokesperson noted the growing momentum and enthusiasm, celebrating the grassroots support that fuels their efforts for a more affordable New York City. The campaign has not yet responded to requests for additional comments.
